    1905, Jersey City, New Jersey. Our beginnings.

    Actually, things started many years earlier, when Edward Mead Johnson, Sr., and his brother                James co-founded Johnson and Johnson in 1885. 

    Two years later E. Mead left Johnson & Johnson to focus his new venture, which he renamed               Mead Johnson & Company in 1905.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A subject close to home.

E. Mead was motivated by a desire to make products that would help people lead healthier lives, so infant nutrition was a natural fit.

He not only saw the need for high-quality products for babies; he knew as a father how serious feeding difficulties could be. His own son Ted had survived serious feeding problems as an infant.

E. Mead learned that Ted wasn't the only baby with feeding issues.

In fact, sadly, many babies were dying before their first birthdays because of feeding problems.

 

 

 

 

 

Creating the first formula for infant.

E. Mead learned from the leading paediatrician of his time that the medical profession needed a product that could be more easily tolerated than the homemade and other experimental preparations typically fed to infants when breast milk wasn't available. The physician requested this type of product.

After much research, E. Mead and his son Lambert discovered how to manufacture it.

After successful clinical testing, Dextri-Maltose® was introduced in 1911. This specialty carbohydrate was later used as an ingredient in nine other Mead Johnson products.

Dextri-Maltose was a pioneer product in infant feeding and stayed on the market for over 60 years.

 

 

 

 

The move to Evansville.

During World War I, the potato starch needed to make Dextri-Maltose became unavailable. So, E. Mead moved his business to Evansville, Indiana, where corn was readily available as an alternate carbohydrate source. Today, Evansville is still Mead Johnson's global headquarters.

 

Amazing start.

In the early 1920's, Mead Johnson scientists began producing an impressive line of nutritional products. Many of them were world "firsts," and proof of Mead Johnson's commitment to meeting unique nutritional needs with unique products.

 

 

Enfamil, Nutramigen.

Over the years, Mead Johnson has produced an impressive array of formulas for infants and specialty nutritional innovations including Enfamil LIPIL, Nutramigen our leading products today.

Nutramigen, the first formula for infant for the nutritional management of the children allergic to the cow's milk appeared in 1942. 

Introduced in 1959, 50 years of existence, Enfamil has undergone several significant formulations - each one designed to bring it nutritionally complete with nutrients close to breast milk

Every baby deserves a good start in life.

One baby out of 1,000 is born each year with a serious digestive disease or metabolic disorder. Mead Johnson is committed to helping give these extraordinary children a good start in life.

The company works with these “One-in-a-Million Kids” and their paediatricians to make special formulas for rare metabolic disorders such as maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), phenylketonuria (PKU) and tyrosinemia.

Since its beginnings more than 100 years ago, Mead Johnson has grown from the ideas of one man into a global company with more than 70 products in over 50 countries.

Mead Johnson's worldwide leadership in nutrition can be traced back nearly a century to founder Edward Mead Johnson. He was among the first innovators in the early 1900s dedicated to the well-being of babies and to the science of infant nutrition.

In Europe, Mead Johnson is a leader in specialist formulas for infants such as Nutramigen, for infants with cow's milk allergy and Enfamil AR and many other products for infants with common feeding problems such as diarrhoea. Through consultation with healthcare professionals and extensive clinical research Mead Johnson also provides new answers to feeding problems in innovative ways including Lipil innovation.
